We check whether a protest will actually lower your tax bill, after caps and exemptions, before you pay. If it will, we mail you a ready-to-sign kit with a return envelope addressed to the Hidalgo County Appraisal District — a flat $89. You sign it and mail it. No percentage of your savings.
To protest your Hidalgo County property taxes in 2027, send a Notice of Protest (Form 50-132) to the Hidalgo County Appraisal District by May 17, 2027 — or within 30 days of your appraisal notice, whichever is later. Include evidence that your home is valued above market or above similar homes. Protests are authorized under Texas Tax Code §41.41. TaxAppeal USA checks first whether a protest will actually lower your tax bill. If it will, we mail you a ready-to-sign protest kit for a flat $89 — you sign it and mail it. No percentage of your savings.
We hold Hidalgo County's 2026 appraisal roll, as the district publishes it. Every figure below is counted directly from it — 208,626 single-family homes, the district's own numbers. Nothing here is estimated or averaged in from another county.
39.5% of Hidalgo County homes are held below market by a cap — a high share, and the single most common reason a Hidalgo County protest wins on paper and saves nothing. Market value has to fall past the capped value before a dollar reaches the bill. Texas caps how fast a homestead's taxable value can rise — 10% a year under Tax Code § 23.23, and 20% on most non-homestead property under § 23.231. We check where your property sits against that cap before you pay us, and we tell you when the answer is that a protest would not move your bill.
The median Hidalgo County home on the roll is 1,520 square feet — a compact home. On a smaller house each square foot carries more of the value, so the district's recorded living area is the first figure worth checking: a measurement that is off by a hundred feet shifts the per-foot comparison more here than it would on a larger home.
The median Hidalgo County value divided by the median home size comes to roughly $118 a square foot. That is a modest per-foot level, and it makes small inconsistencies count: a home valued $10 a foot above its comparables is already about 8.5% over them.

Check My Protest — $89 Kit →TaxAppeal USA is a self-service document-preparation service. We prepare a ready-to-sign appeal kit and mail it to you; you sign it and mail it to the county yourself. In every state we serve, including Florida, we are not property tax consultants, agents, or representatives, we do not provide tax or legal advice, and we do not file appeals or represent customers before any appraisal district, board of assessors, board of equalization, value adjustment board, or review board. Every appeal, protest and petition is prepared for the property owner, signed by the owner, and mailed by the owner in the owner’s name. In Florida your petition is signed by you as the property owner under section 194.011(3), Florida Statutes, and the county’s Value Adjustment Board filing fee is paid by you directly to the county. TaxAppeal USA does not sign as your representative, does not appear before the Board, and does not present evidence or argument at a hearing.
